Shelley Johnson Scholarship Program
The Orange Grove/Lyman Chamber of Commerce has
always supported our local schools. The chamber has
always given out scholarships to graduating high school
students going to college, based on financial need and
academic scores. Shelley Johnson was a local, self employed
hard working single Mom that had a love for her community
and the Orange Grove/Lyman Chamber of Commerce. She
chaired our education committee that works closely with our
local schools. Shelley was a wonderful person and was loved
by everyone that met her. She died in 2005, leaving her
5 year old daughter behind. Due to the love that she had for
our community, our chamber and our children's education,
we decided to name the scholarship fund in memory of her.

There are limitations to what grades, scores, and recommendations can tell us about any candidate. Please use
the following three short essays to help us learn more about you. We hope that in writing the essays you will
reflect your attitudes, values, and your own perception of yourself. Use a separate sheet or sheets of paper for
each essay topic. Limit each essay to no more than 300 words.
1) Identify a major event that influenced your life and describe in what ways it changed your behavior and/or
thought process and why it had so much influence on you.
2) Describe what you expect to gain from your collage experience. Also, from your own personal perspective,
comment on whether or not there is a significant difference between a big school and a small school: an urban
university and a small town collage, or attending a community college for a year or two before seeking a four year
degree. Also, please comment on what you see as the advantages of being near your home while in college.
3) Please tell us about your interest in the areas of study which you wish to pursue. You may include a
description of relevant course work, personal experience, or extracurricular activities.
CERTIFICATION
I DECLARE THAT ANY AND ALL ESSAYS ARE MY OWN WORK, AND THAT ALL INFORMATION IN MY
APPLICATION IS, TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, TRUE AND CORRECT.
