The first legally noted settlers when the United States opened the Coast to
citizens were James and Agnes Dale. They purchased land April 24, 1820,
known as Wilson Farm Nurseries. John G. and Sue J. Land purchased land
in the Landon area in 1873.
Landon thrived with a brick kiln, a general store, and a post office for shipping
pecans and oranges to the North. The Creosote Company and Yarian were
thriving businesses. In 1917, William Thompson donated land for a school
which was called Orange Grove for the groves in the area.
North of Orange Grove is the community of Lyman. Lyman Reeves moved his
wife and four children there in 1885. He built a sawmill, Methodist Church,
and a small store. All are gone except for the church. The town was called
Reeves Crossing until the community applied for a post office and discovered
another Reeves. The town compromised and used its founder’s first name,
Lyman.

What is the chamber all about and what is my membership dues used for?
The Orange Grove / Lyman Chamber of Commerce are made up of many committees.
Each committee has their own area of goals. The following is a list of some of the things that our
chamber does for our community.
Shelley Johnson Scholarship Fund - The chamber has always raised money for a
scholarship given to a high school student going to college. We now have a scholarship fund in
honor of Shelley Johnson. Shelley was an active chamber member that was real involved in our
education committee. Shelley passed away in 2005. In honor of her, we named our scholarship
program The Shelley Johnson Scholarship Fund. We raise money each year by hosting a dance
and holding raffles. The money we raise will go to 5 deserving high school students going to
college.
Quarterly Eye Opener - The Eye Opener is a breakfast program put on by our Public Affairs
Committee that presents a guest speaker, normally a State or local elected official. We present
awards to our outstanding students, public safety officials, Military Service Person and members
who make an outstanding contribution to our community.
Legislative Luncheon - Our Governmental Affairs Committee host our annual Legislative
Luncheon with our County, Municipal, State or Federal Officials.
Golden Agers Senior Program - This program is open to the public for those 50 and older. It
is always held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon at Gateway United Methodist
Church. A free lunch is provided, followed by a variety of quest speakers, entertainment or
activities.
Business After Hours – This gives our members an opportunity to visit the business that
sponsors the event, meet people and network. The business that sponsors the after hours
provides food and drinks. This is normally held the 2nd Thursday of the month from 5:00pm to
7:00pm. To sponsor a BAH, you may call the chamber office at 832-3028 for more information.
